Plant compositions: Ficus benjamina ‘Natasja’, Helix hedera, Ficus pumila ‘Minima’ moss, gravel, soil.
Ficus benjamina ‘Natasja’ saplings growing inside of the medium terrarium/flaschengarten.
In this terrarium lives a small Ficus benjamina ‘Natasja’ bonsai, plant commonly known as weeping fig, benjamin fig or ficus tree. It is a species of the family Moraceae, native to Asia and Australia. This tropical fig cultivar with unusually tiny leaves has a great proportion to create a small landscape inside of the glass. From curiosities, it is the official tree of Bangkok, so it might be a perfect companion to remind you of some warm holidays. This Ficus likes to get a haircut done from time to time, but don’t worry! As another Ficus, it has a lot of patience for your first cuts. It is super easy going and thriving with most conditions, are far as it is not in direct sunlight 🙂
Worth to mention is also fact that this specie of tropical fig produce aerial roots once humidity is high enough (at least 80% of humidity). The process is really fast, so don’t be surprised as one day you notice tiny white roots emerging from branches or trunk. They rapidly reach moss or soil and start to dig even deeper.
To give more a wild feeling of a forest, the composition is filled with two different ivies. One, Hedera helix, is a common ivy for our zone and it’s probably accompanying us in each forest in Germany. The second, Ficus pumila ‘Minima’ is a rare tropical ivy, but it was chosen cause of its tiny foliage, much more adequate in the scale for a terrarium.
